Custodian - Lewiston

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Custodian is responsible for performing a wide range of cleaning duties, using specialized housekeeping equipment and chemicals in order to maintain a clean, safe, and aseptic environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:*

Cleans rooms, offices, furniture, washrooms, toilets, and special purpose rooms; polishes furniture, floors, and metal work.

Operates various types of cleaning equipment, both mechanical and electrical, in order to remove soils, stains, and other debris from assigned areas.

Washes and dusts woodwork and windows; cleans floors by sweeping and vacuuming; cleans tables and sinks.

Operates carpet extraction equipment, floor machines burnishers, buffer, vacuums, and other related electrical equipment.

Operates and maintains equipment in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner.

Uses chemicals and supplies according to standards to ensure safety and efficiency.

Empties trash and garbage, using safety procedures to comply with hazardous
waste requirements.

Changes light bulbs, unclogs sinks and toilets and reports any problems or damages to the Facilities Manager.

Orders cleaning supplies, as needed.

May run agency related errands utilizing own vehicle.


SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

Duties require knowledge of housekeeping service equivalent to completion of a high school diploma and up to one month of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must possess a valid State of Maine driver's license.

Considerable knowledge of basic good housekeeping practices in maintaining building cleanliness and good order.

Considerable knowledge of the proper uses and application techniques for cleaning products and equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform simple manipulative skills such as sweeping, washing, and emptying trash cans.

Ability to perform repetitive tasks in cleaning buildings with minimal supervision.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to work independently.

Must be conscientious about building appearance at all times.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Continuous walking, standing, stooping, pushing, and pulling, and periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions.

Ability to lift, carry, and position objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques

Utilizes proper sanitary precautions when handling trash, garbage, and/or other potential biohazards.

May be required to travel utilizing personal vehicle.
