Under the direction of the Psychiatric Medical Director, the Psychiatrist is responsible for direct and indirect outpatient care to adults presenting with mental illness. This will include assessment, development of the plan of treatment, participation in on-going psychiatric medical management, recommendation of consultations and referrals, and participation in discharge planning.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:*

Works collaboratively and effectively with other staff and professionals. This will include, as indicated, coordination and participation with support staff, therapists, care managers, community support workers, and other medical colleagues.
Complies with the agency's policies and procedures, including those pertaining to medical services and medication management.
Works from paradigms of Recovery, Trauma Sensitivity, and Co-occurring illness. Further, has respect for a consumer-driven plan of care to the extent that is medically safe and will pursue the least restrictive treatment interventions.
Provides general health screening and assessment as relevant to psychiatric medication management, e.g. monitoring weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar.
Provides medication injections of psychotropic medications according to agency policies and procedures.
Works with Psychiatric Medical Director to develop or modify department policies and procedures and is proactive in bringing concerns regarding the system of care to the Psychiatric Medical Director.
Provides medication and health information and education as indicated, and as
is necessary to support a solid process of informed consent and risk/benefit
Meets and maintains documentation requirements per the agency's policies and procedures, and as required by the Psychiatric Medical Director. This will include timely evaluation notes, progress notes, and activity/billing logs.
Seeks and advocates for referral of patients to other programs and providers as clinically indicated.
Maintains knowledge of relevant documentation and licensing standards.
Utilizes the consumer's electronic health record (EHR) to ensure that documentation is complete, accurate, timely and meets regulatory and agency standards.
Follows policies and procedures with regard to the EHR to ensure that the services provided are consistent with best practices, assessment and/or treatment goals.
Seeks to work collaboratively and to coordinate care with patients' primary
Timely review, response, and documentation of lab work, as indicated.
Timely return of calls from patients, such as for reported side effects from medication, questions about medication or their plans of care, or calls from other providers. Documentation of these contacts is required.
Available to assist with cross-coverage of other agency mid-level or physician providers of services to adult patients. This would include such duties as assisting with managing refill requests, and assisting with managing urgent or acute clinical circumstances during usual work hours.
Advocates and participates in processes to obtain needed medication for patients; e.g., through indigent programs, prior authorization systems, and/or samples.
Addresses issues of patients' personal health and hygiene, as indicated, as part of their plans of care.
Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Respects and considers input from everyone involved in patients' care or support systems. This includes other staff and professionals, family and significant others.
Provides public education and professional consultation services by mutual agreement as directed by the Psychiatric Medical Director.
Serves as Medical Consultant for Behavioral Health Homes, as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Must possess and maintain the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in the State of Maine, including a valid certificate in psychiatry issued by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. A DEA certificate and relevant experience required.

Solid understanding of the relationship of psychiatric/brain illness, psychodynamics, and general medical illness (holism).
Participates in recruitment, selection, and orientation of new staff members in accordance with agency and program policies and procedures. Provides clinical supervision for other staff according to licensure or certification requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
Regular use of computer keyboards, telephone and operating office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
Occasional lifting and carrying of supplies, files, documents, records, etc.
